Sherlock Holmes is a fictional private detective created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle . He is the most adapted fictional character of all time . His recent portrayals in movies by Robert Downey Jr. and in television series by Benedict Cumberbatch has received critical acclaim . But in my regards his original short stories were some of the greatest works of fiction ever written . Here are the best 10 Sherlock Holmes short stories in my view . In creation of this list I have focused on the stand alone series so that a new reader does not have to read the whole cannon . But still there are some interrelated elements which cannot be avoided.
